Recently, a young man on his way home from work, picked up his two children from a day care/learning center as he had many times before. This man went home and dropped the two children off with his pregnant wife, and went out into the woods and killed himself.
Why? I tried to find news of it in the local paper. Nothing. I looked at the crime blotter for the county. Nothing. There are too many other “more important” events to report.
“Those children. . .” said the person who told me it happened. “Even the oldest, only age two, won’t remember her father at all. It’s horrible. They’re going to have questions that just can’t be answered.”
Indeed. An obviously troubled young man who cared just enough for his family that he spared them finding his dead body in his house, couldn’t see a way to live any longer. Whatever trouble that plagued him, real or imagined, was simply too much. His wife, his children, are left to deal with the aftermath; they are left with shattered lives that they will have to rebuild.
No matter what that man faced, it wasn’t so serious that it couldn’t be worked through. But he couldn’t see it. He couldn’t deal with it. He felt he had no hope.
Over 2,500 years ago the city of Jerusalem was sieged. Many died. The remainder of the people were injured, ill, and starving. The city was destroyed. The Temple of Solomon was destroyed. Most of the remaining people were taken as slaves. G-d’s prophet, Jeremiah, had warned the people of the consequences of sin. They wouldn’t listen. In the Biblical book of Lamentations, Jeremiah writes:
“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;
His mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul,
‘therefore I will hope in him.’ ”
Lamentations 3:22-24
For those who have accepted G-d’s Gift to us in the Person of Y’shuaJesus, there is hope. Despite not always being able to see ahead, to see beyond the difficulties that we are experiencing at the moment, there is hope in Y’shuaJesus.
Being at rock bottom is terrifying. It feels like there is no place to go, that there is no person to whom we may turn. We feel devastated. It is at this point in our lives we can choose to look upward, toward Heaven, toward our LORD, our CREATOR. We can pray:

Amazing post. I read on two separate posts today that we should be ourselves. After reading your post I am wondering whether that is good enough. If we are tired of doing things our own way, perhaps we should be who the Lord wants us to be rather than being ourselves. Thanks for sharing.

Some people don’t seem to need a hole to fall in to make them look up. Others need very deep holes, and to hit rock bottom. We can be ourselves, our true selves. But only in Jesus. With Jesus, up close and personal, we can have the true and full life that we were intended to live. Jesus summed it up when he spoke of losing everything that one normally thinks of as a life in this world, and gaining not only life in the next world, but a true sense of life WHILE WE ARE IN THIS WORLD. Praise Jesus.
May our Lord bless you with the fulness of His life in you.
