Caedmon’s Hymn

Now must we praise the Guardian of Heaven;
The might of the Lord and His wisdom of mind;
The work o the Father of Glory, make of all wonders;
He, Holy Creator, first fashioned Heaven
As a roof for the sons of men;
Then the eternal Guardian of mankind
Adorned the earth below, a land for men;
Almighty King and everlasting LORD.

Memorial to Cædmon, St Mary’s Churchyard, Whitby. The inscription reads, “To the glory of God and in memory of Cædmon the father of English Sacred Song. Fell asleep hard by, 680.”

Caedmon, monk and poet, in the 7th Century double monastery (both monks and nuns) of Streonæshalch, overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England.
