I am left assuming that the songwriter is talking about Jesus but it never names him by name. Is that what is missing?

My thoughts exactly. YeshuaJesus is the subject, but only pronouns are used to address Him. It’s not the only time YeshuaJesus isn’t mentioned in a work that is so very much about Him. This week was the celebration of Purim, during which the Book of Ester is read. G-d isn’t mentioned in Ester, either. But His handprint is all over it.
