Past Choices Revisited

Ever think about past choices? I admit that too often I do. What would have it been like had I made a different choice? I should have. . . I could have. . . But I didn’t.

But what if I had, for instance, continued on with the U.S. Forest Service. I was a Forest Electronics Technician on the Lassan National Forest. The main office was located in Susanville, California. It was an interesting place, to say the least. I’d been there only once, passing through, before I accepted that position. I remember very well, as I passed through I said “I sure would never go to this forest.” Well, G-d does have a sense of humor, (Never say Never) and led me there anyway. I met some wonderful people, worked with a terrific bunch of guys, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Yet I missed the ocean, which I’d nearly always lived near. But after a few more years perhaps I’d have been selected for a Forest Electronics Engineer position on the Six Rivers National Forest in Eureka, California. That would have been so perfect. I did, in fact, live near there a few years later, after leaving the Forest Service. I attended Humboldt State University, in Arcata, a few miles north of Eureka. The whole area is gorgeous. Its where the redwood forest meets the Pacific Ocean. The average temperature is about 70 degrees (21 celcius), with highs and lows within ten degrees. It had its down sides, for some people: The bright California sun almost never shone; it was cloud cover most of the time. Coastal after all. Some people found it unbearable and fled after less than a year living there. But I loved it.

When I’m really tired of the traffic around the area in which I now reside, I think of Arcata. I can see the redwoods and smell the ocean. I remember various choices I’ve made, looking at them as if they might not have been such good choices. Thinking about past choices as wrong ones comes doesn’t come just from frustration with the place I am suppose to call home at the moment. Such times come upon me when I feel poorly about what I’m currently doing, what I’m not doing, or times when I just don’t feel good about myself.

Others have experience trying times and must have known it was their choices that led them. Paul, for instance. Things weren’t going too well in Rome for the Apostle Paul. In what we know as the fourth chapter of Paul’s second letter to Timothy (2 Timothy), Paul says he’d been left during his defense, and requests Timothy to come to him, bringing along Mark, and some things he’d left behind, like a cloak. He was writing from prison, which must have been cold. So Paul is alone in prison. But remember, Paul wanted to come to Rome. He’d said as much as he journeyed toward Jerusalem. He’d even been warned of problems in Jerusalem, and kept right on going up to Jerusalem, into danger. And in the following passage, we see just how Paul got to Rome:

And Agrippa said to Festus, “This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar.

Acts 26:32

We don’t read of Paul whining about being in prison. We don’t hear that he mourned the days he roamed around Asia freely preaching the Gospel to the Gentiles. No. Paul went to Rome to testify the The Faith before the Emperor, and to all Rome. Along the way he preached to everyone from prisoners to government officials, soldiers, and even the king. He preached to the inhabitants of a small island upon which he was ship wrecked. He preached to the Roman Believers.

Paul knew his life was not his, but his was to live as Messiah, to do the will of Messiah, free or in chains.

When I come to my senses and stop whining and feeling sorry for myself, I can appreciate that which the Lord has allowed me to do on the way to where I now reside, not in spite of bad choices, but because the choices, as difficult as they were, were the right choice to have made. And these times lead to other times ahead.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Floods and Devistation in Malawi

th

Yesterday I received an email from Renewal Fellowship Ministries

From: Maranatha Churches in MALAWI:

THERE WAS HEAVY RAIN & WIND ALMOST FOR TWO WEEKS HERE IN MALAWI & AFTER IT SO MANY HOUSES FLOW DOWN ,CROPS DEVASTATED.

On 24th February, 2013 Pastors from different places visited the damaged home of their senior Pastor Peter Timothy Fungulani for prayers & discussing way forward to help the homeless Pastor.

Before everything the meeting was opened by a prayer given by Pastor Noah from Mozambique, then a 74years old Pastor Hassan from Nsanje give people word of God from the book of Genesis 12:1-3—-He tells the attendee that our present Abraham is Pastor Peter & if we show love /support/ bless him then the Lord will also help us in other ways in our critical situation.
-Due to heavy damage caused to the house all Pastors were deeply touched & agreed to discuss way forward to assist our dear Pastor , & A lot contributed this:

There are some men who are builders they volunteered to build the house of Man of God Pastor Peter without paid their heart is breeding to see the Pastor homeless.

Three Pastor in the meeting are timber/lumber makers they promised to give 10timbers/lumbers each & if the house needs more then they shall charge those new ordered half down to the actual price.

When these news was broke to the gathering at Tengani (a place where Pastor Peter normally based) almost 127strong Women (excluding Widows but they too promised to take part)promised to carry water from the borehole to the place where the house is intended to built freely.

Youth group promised to carry bricks from the old place to the newly allocated .
Pastor Peter is not a father to his family only he is also the father to Orphans ,Widows ,Pastors & even when Lord allows you to visit us you shall sleep in this house & we pray & intend to build a house to have enough rooms ,& with the damage caused to house some bricks are not in good shape we just need to buy 2000more bricks for the house.
The builder intend to build a strong building & they need 5 bags of Cement .

There is a need for tins / iron sheets for roofing the house.
..
With prayers & fasting ,

A Song of Praise

A Song of Praise. Of David. I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

Psalm 145:1-5

“Those who, under troubles and temptations, abound in fervent prayer, shall in due season abound in grateful praise, which is the true language of holy joy. Especially we should speak of God’s wondrous work of redemption, while we declare his greatness. For no deliverance of the Israelites, nor the punishment of sinners, so clearly proclaims the justice of God, as the cross of Christ exhibits it to the enlightened mind. It may be truly said of our Lord Jesus Christ, that his words are words of goodness and grace; his works are works of goodness and grace. He is full of compassion; hence he came into the world to save sinners. When on earth, he showed his compassion both to the bodies and souls of men, by healing the one, and making wise the other. He is of great mercy, a merciful High Priest, through whom God is merciful to sinners.” (Matthew Henry, from his concise commentary)

In Mr. Henry’s comments, I find that the reward for “fervent prayer” during trials and temptations will be that some day I’ll “abound in grateful praise. I shant disagree with Mr. Henry; certainly there are always rewards at future times for today’s righteous acts. I will add, however, to Mr. Henry’s comment. David sang to his Lord, our Lord, “I will extol you, my G-d and King, and bless your name forever and ever.” When David sang this, he could not help but be elevated into the joyful realm of G-d’s Heavenly Kingdom, if only for a minute, even an instant. And one minute, even one instant, of Heaven is enough to change one’s heart for the day of troubles that follow.

Memories. . .

Can’t you hear the soulful echoes of Barbara Streisand singing Memory?

Memory – all alone in the moonlight. I can dream of the old days.
Life was beautiful then.
I remember the time I knew what happiness was.
Let the memory live again.
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/b/barbara_streisand/memory.html ]

A few days ago, my family celebrated the birthday of our son. Yesterday my wife and I celebrated the anniversary of our wedding. Lots of memories this week.

Today, though, we do not celebrate. But we do remember. We remember the senseless loss of life that occurred eleven years ago. We recall the passengers and crew of four aircraft that were hijacked and intentionally crashed. We remember the thousands of people that died on the ground at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. We remember.

What will we do with the memory?

For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.

Psalm 90:7

Moses, says Matthew Henry, “taught the people of Israel to acknowledge the wrath of G-d to be the cause of all their miseries.”

With such acknowledgement, the Psalmist turns to G-d asking Him to be reconciled to His people (v.13) and finally:

And let the beauty of the Lord our G-d be upon us, and establish thou the work of our hands upon us. . .

v.17

The prerequisite for the blessing of the Lord is acknowledgment of our own unrighteousness before Him. Country/Bluegrass singer Charlie Daniels wrote in his blog that America will come to its knees, either in prayer or in ruin. Today, as we remember the loss of American lives at the hands of a foreign enemy, we must also acknowledge our responsibility to turn from our own unrighteousness and seek the righteousness of G-d through Y’shuaJesus.

Trials and Such

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. . . (Acts 1:1-3)

The time between the Rescurrection and the Ascension is forty days. This in-between time was filled with visits from Y’shuaJesus. The visits, I think, were to bolster the faith of those who just weren’t sure about Y’shuaJesus’s mission. Some had believed He was to be a physical savior for the nation of Israel, freeing it from the Roman Empire, leading a Maccabee-type revolt. Others just didn’t understand at all. Disciples discussed the events among themselves. Like the disciples on the road to Amaoz. The disciples all needed to feel the burning in their hearts of the presence of Y’shuaJesus. They needed to be reminded of their true missions.

This time between also must have been a time of trial. The number of days between the Resurrection and the Ascension caught my attention. Forty. It is the number of days Y’shuaJesus was in the wilderness, tempted. It was the number of years Israel spent wandering in the desert. It was the number of Ali Baba’s thieves. (It’s okay to smile, this isn’t your trial/test.) There were a lot of forty-year periods in Moses’s life. After being tossed into the river, he was groomed to be an Egyptian prince for forty years. Then he let his anger get the best of him, and spent forty years in the wilderness. As if eighty years of testing weren’t enough, he gets called back to Egypt to rescue a rather stiff-necked people, and suffer trials with them for another forty years. Not such a great retirement package!

It seems to me our own lives are times in between. I’d thought perhaps we were here just waiting. But it looks more like we’re also being tested the whole time here. Even if we’ve experience a moment of Power from on High, a Pentecost of our own with an in-filling of the Holy Spirit, we are still in test mode. Isn’t life in Messiah exciting? He called us, like He called His disciples and Apostles. He walked with us a while, like He did with them. Then He leaves us for some testing and tribulation, stopping by every now and again to make sure our faith is bolstered, that we remain strong.

But oh, how glorious are those time in His embrace!

And His Spirit He gave to us to give us His Strength, His Power. No, not to get out of the test, but to deal with it. There’s a line in one of the Lord of the Rings books, in which Frodo is in a very dark and gloomy forest. He says something in about it certainly not being a sunny walk in May. He’s scared. He feels lost. Then he looks ahead and sees the sun, shining onto the end of the path. It’s like that with our lives, I think: we aren’t just walking a nice path along the river’s edge. We are running a track meet, an obstacle course, jumping hurdles. There is a promise to a feast for the winner. And we are all winners in Messiah, if we have given ourselves to Him, if we’ve accepted His way of salvation. All will eventually acknowledge Y’shuaJesus. All will eventually knell before King Y’shuaJesus and declare that indeed He is Lord. Will we do it now, while it is still Day, before the Night comes to take some away?

Thank you Lord Y’shuaJesus!
